If you’re looking to experience a gap year destination and backpacking adventure like millions of travellers have, then Australia has to be at the top of your list.
It’s been one of the prime travel destinations globally for decades, with major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth offering limitless opportunities. These cities combine beach and city, making it one of the sought-after lifestyles for those wanting to find their perfect work-life balance.
Yet, away from the cities, Australia boasts some of the most jaw-dropping natural landscapes in the world. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, allowing you to explore it on 4x4s and create your own off-road adventure. The Whitsundays is the gateway to the one-of-a-kind Great Barrier Reef, each being a must-see when ‘Down Under’.
Whether you pick city life, intrepid explorer life, or possibly both, Australia caters for it all. No wonder it’s one of the most popular countries in the world.
How to Secure a Working Holiday in Australia
To spend up to two years living, working, and travelling in Australia, you’ll need to secure a working holiday visa. It’s the perfect vehicle for 18-35 year olds, and a lot of the older restrictions on the working holiday visa (such as stricter age restrictions, work limitations etc) have been removed or changed.
As per the australia.com website, it costs AUD $635 to apply for an Australian working holiday visa. You’re able to apply for the visa here on the official Australian Home Affairs and immigration website.
No, you do not need a job before applying for a working holiday visa for Australia. In fact, part of the appeal is that you don’t know what your journey will be, so the majority of people simply book their flights over and work it out along the way. With so much opportunity in Australia for backpackers and those on a working holiday visa, it’s the perfect chance to make your own path.

Kultur
Australia’s culture is intertwined with aboriginal culture, who are the original inhabitants of the land. In most places, you’ll find this fact observed and respected, and that culture is an integral part of what Australia is as a country. Its modern culture is based on being an outdoors nation, with its beach lifestyle envied worldwide. Australia has a real community feel in most areas, and more often than not, you’ll be greeted by welcoming locals who are famous for their sense of humour.
Sport
Australia is a sports-crazy country. For a relatively small population compared to its area, they punch well above their weight in many different sports. Cricket is huge in Australia, and the likes of the Ashes is a staple sporting event for most. They’re also often near the top of world rankings for cricket, rugby, and more, whilst local favourites like Aussie rules and surfing have huge followings. Sport is as engrained in culture as anything else, so for those who love sport, whether being involved or spectating, Australia is a perfect country for it.
Musik
Australia has given rise to many famous musicians over the past few decades, notably Kylie Minogue, AC/DC, Sia, Men at Work, and more. The sheer scope of the musicians named here shows the eclectic mix of music you’ll find in Australia, with various styles and influences giving something for everyone. Its festival and nightlife scene is also thriving, meaning a lot of music trends are finding their way to Australia and from Australia back to the rest of the world.
Umwelt
Australia is blessed to have some of the world's most spectacular natural environments. The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world's natural wonders. It has drawn people to the area for decades, yet it's only the tip of the iceberg regarding the country's natural beauty. It has more beaches than you could visit, forests which touch the ocean, grand rock formations, and more. Yet, most of this is found around the edge of the country, as the famous 'Outback' in the middle is a vast expanse of Australian wilderness.
Sydney Activities
The vast Blue Mountains is another must-do when visiting Sydney. It’s slightly further out, but still connected with a direct train from the city. It’s certainly worth the 2 hour journey, as the hikes and viewpoints here are simply incredible. The blue hue you see is actually from the Eucalyptus trees, which combine with water vapour to scatter rays of light that are blue in colour.
The world famous Bondi Beach is a must-visit when going to Sydney. It’s one of the busiest beaches in Australia, but for good reason. It’s a stunning beach, where you can walk along it or even get involved with some of the famous surf there. You’ll be able to get the Eastern Surburbs train to Bondi Junction, and you can walk down, or take a bus, from there. It’s also the start of another famous thing to do in Sydney, which is the Bondi to Coogee walk.
The iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House combination is a picture everyone knows to see, and very few forget once they have. Get the train down to Circular Quay, and from here, the view is impossible to miss. You’ll be able to walk around to both, getting pictures that last a lifetime.
