Summer Camp Stories: Claudia's Experience
Our summer camp stories series is a real-life look at what summer camp is really like for first-time staff. First is Claudia, who's based in New Zealand and is a Participant Support Specialist for Camp Leader.
What summer camp did you go to?
"I went to Misty Meadows, which is a summer camp based in a place called Conroe, in Texas. It’s north of Houston, which is probably the most well known city nearby."
When did you go to Misty Meadows?
"I first went to Misty Meadows in 2015."
What did you do at Misty Meadows?
"I was an Archery Counselor at camp, which was such a fun and different type of job compared to anything back home."
Before you flew out to camp for the first time, how were you feeling?
"I was a fresh-faced 18 year old when I first went to camp; it was also the first time I had been overseas by myself, so there was the natural feeling of nervousness mixed with excitement.
I was excited to finally do something out of school that I enjoyed!
Once I was on the plane and flying out of New Zealand, I knew I was ready for this experience, and I just wanted to enjoy every bit of it."
What is your favourite summer camp memory?
"My favourite summer camp memory is making my first camp fire and first s'more (honestly, they’re amazing!)
Its what I thought was quintessentially CAMP! I felt like I was in a movie."
What’s one thing they don’t tell you about summer camp?
"It is the hardest job you'll ever love.
You’ll definitely have some long days during your summer, but its absolutely all worth it in the end (and more!)"
What’s your advice to those going to camp for the first time?
"Be open to new experiences, say yes to new things but also take time for yourself.
If you're feeling overwhelmed or tired (which will definitely happen in such a fast-paced experience), take a nap on your time or days off.
Managing energy levels at summer camp is such an important skill, as you won’t be able to give the highest level of care to the campers if you’re not on top form, and you won’t be able to enjoy it as much as you possibly can.
Rest is key to making the summer last as long, and be as enjoyable, as possible."
