Summer Camp Stories: Penny's Experience
Penny’s first year at camp was in 2019 with Camp Leaders in America, where she was living the dream as a watersports specialist.
If you're contemplating heading to work at a summer camp in America for the first time, then Penny's story is one you'll want to know.
What summer camp did you go to?
“I went to Camp Echo Lake, which is in New York in the Adirondack Park.”
When did you go to Camp Echo Lake?
“I went to Echo Lake back in 2019 for my first summer; time flies!”
What job role did you do at Camp Echo Lake?
“I was a waterfront specialist, meaning I got to lead all sorts of incredible watersports and water activities.”
Before you flew out to camp for the first time, how were you feeling?
“I was super excited for my first solo overseas adventure since finishing uni.
I weirdly did not feel anxious or nervous, and could not wait to make this trip my own and explore a country I had never been to before.
So the main feeling was definitely of excitement!”
What is your favourite summer camp memory?
“My favourite summer camp memory at Echo Lake was when all the waterfront staff got to "test" the new lake toys.
It honestly just turned into an hour of fun and a chance to be silly the day before the campers arrived.
It really created a sense of bonding with the team as well, which was so important for the rest of the summer.”
What's one thing they don't tell you about summer camp?
“The job is so action packed, and you get the best sleep you have ever had every night!
In fact, definitely make the most of your sleep. If you’re well rested, you’ll be able to give the most each day, whereas the opposite will really drain you.”
What's your advice to those going to camp for the first time?
“Say yes to everything!
Take any opportunity to experience everything camp has to offer, and keep an open mind as you will be experiencing a lot of "firsts" as well as challenges.
For those with an open mind, you’ll have the summer of a lifetime.”
